Dolphins are one of the most recognizable and
beloved creatures in the sea, and have been the subject of much study over the
years.
Dolphins are uniquely built, like a torpedo in
the water. They typically swim in the 3 to 7 mile per hour range, but when
needed they can accelerate to over 20 miles per hour!
Their ability to swim so fast baffled
researchers for many years. It has been determined that their powerful tails
provide the thrust needed for such speeds.
Dolphins navigate using Echolocation, which is
essentially sonar. They send out sounds and listen to the echo that bounces
back. That tells them exactly what is around them, and where their prey is when
hunting.
